Chapter Twenty-Four

Lincoln saw the men leave. They were in the right place. Was Ruth inside? Thomas? Was she alive? Was anyone else in the house? Lincoln decided not to tell Lynn. He didn’t want an emotional reaction that would lead to her charging the house. He also didn’t want to inform her until he checked the house to ensure Ruth was there and alive. If she wasn’t, he wanted to prevent Lynn’s last sight of her daughter in the position of what he feared he might find.

He moved around the corner but ducked back fast as the storm door slammed open and a large man with wild unkempt hair dragged another smaller man outside. He tossed him on the ground and pulled a handgun. “Go ahead,” he said. “Make it more challenging and run.”

Lincoln recognized the man as Thomas. He was about to be executed.

“I’ll give you to the count of five. One.”

Thomas scrambled to his feet and tried to run but tripped over his own hastily moving feet. Lincoln had to act. He dropped the binoculars, drew his gun, and ran toward the metal chain link fence typical to this neighborhood separating the next house. Even if he managed to scale the fence without being seen, he was still four houses away. The best he could hope for was to draw the assassin’s attention to him, and he’d be standing in the open. The secret was to keep moving and shooting. To keep the man off balance.

He reached the fence and in one fluid motion, placed a hand on the crossbar and swung both legs over. He landed on the run. The four-time all-star NFL running back sprinted toward the next fence like it was the goal line and he was in the Super Bowl.

The shooter was still counting, which told Lincoln he had not yet been seen.

“Four.”

Thomas had managed to get to his feet and was attempting to climb the fence at the back of the house. It was obvious to Lincoln Thomas was not going to make it.

Before the gunman reached five, he must have caught movement in his periphery and turned his head toward Lincoln. He was out of time. The next fence was coming up fast. He had to fire but was still too far away to be accurate, not to mention being on the run. Without thought, he triggered his first round as his body took flight. He hurdled the fence like the high school track star he had once been. However, the fence was significantly higher than a hurdle and he was many years from peak form. His trail leg caught the crossbar and he fell while still shooting.

The surprised gunman ducked and fired blindly as he scampered toward the house. With Lincoln tumbling on the ground, the shots were nowhere close to him. He shoulder rolled and came up on one knee, firing toward the man, but his shots were hurried and did not score a hit.

The man stood inside the doorway, covered from the chest down and fired back at Lincoln.
